SULLIVAN – Betty Gordon, our beloved wife, mother and grandmother, died Sept. 25, 2010. She was born July 11, 1937, in East Sullivan, the daughter of Ellis B. and Gussie (Hanna) Johnson. Betty attended Sullivan schools and graduated from Sumner Memorial High School in 1956. She was active in band and was well liked, even loved, by all her schoolmates. After her high school graduation, Betty attended Comptometer School, Portland. She then worked for New England Telephone & Telegraph, Portland and Bangor. She was married to Gerald “Gerry” Gordon, Sept. 13, 1958. After Gerry’s completion of graduate school at the University of Maine, Orono, in 1963, he, Betty and their infant daughter, Kimberly, moved to Selinsgrove, Pa., where he and Betty worked at Susquehanna University – Gerry as professor of history for 35 years and Betty as secretary in the science division for 25 years. Betty and Gerry retired from Susquehanna University in 1997 and returned to their summer home on Flanders Bay, East Sullivan. For the next 13 years they traveled extensively, camping throughout the U.S. and Canada, and taking numerous cruises. Betty was also a volunteer at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital for a number of years and served on the board of Frenchman’s Bay Library. She is survived by her husband of Sullivan; her two children, Kimberly Mitchell and husband, Steve, of Harrisburg, Pa., and Bethalto, Ill., and Kenick Gordon and wife, Helena, of Camp Hill, Pa.; grandchildren, Meghan Dagle, Jakob Gordon and Samuel Gordon; brothers, Richard Johnson and wife, Judith, of Brewer and Robert Johnson of Sullivan; brother-in-law, Kendall Gordon and wife, Patricia, of Brewer; sister-in-law, Janice Hosking and husband, Hank, of Sullivan and Zephyrhills, Fla.; and her beloved dog, Abby. Betty was predeceased by her parents; and by close friend and sister-in-law, Nancy Johnson. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at Sullivan-Sorrento Recreation Center.
