BANGOR – Donald O’Dell McNally, 91, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010, at his home. He was born May 4, 1919, in Ashland, son of Kenneth and Serina (McGowen) McNally. Donald served in the U.S. Army Air Force in India during World War II, as a ground crew mechanic for transports flying over the “Hump” to supply the Chinese fighting against the Japanese. After returning from service, he married Patricia Cox. They had three children, Michael, who predeceased him, and twins, Linda Jean and Larry John. Donald also began his career with N.E. Telephone, later AT&T, as a lineman before becoming a phone system installer. He had opportunities to advance into management, but chose to lead by example. This is the hallmark of his life, example, plus mentoring and never disparaging anyone. He greatly appreciated the invaluable help provided in recent years by his friend, Doug Joy; nephew, Kerry Cox and wife, Deborah; Sally McManus; and, of course, daughter, Linda. Donald is survived by his children, Larry John McNally of New York City, and Linda McNally and her partner, John Butts, of Scarborough; daughter-in-law, Janice McNally of South Portland; and grandchildren, Jesse and Mia McNally. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife, Patricia (Cox) McNally; son, Michael O’Dell McNally; and brothers, George and Eugene McNally. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Ohio Street, Bangor. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com.
