BLAINE – George Edward Hardgrove Sr., 73, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010, at Mars Hill Nursing Home after a lengthy battle with cancer. George, a Blaine native, was born June 17, 1937, to Benjamin H. and Phoebe L. Hardgrove. He attended school locally in Mars Hill. After school George proudly served from 1962 to 1965 in the U.S. Army as a medic in Verdun, France. Upon returning from France, George began work in the grocery industry with Graves and IGA, both in Mars Hill. Later in his career, he decided to start his own business in Blaine, which he operated up until his illness began. He was an avid outdoorsman and fisherman. To George, everyday was a great day to fish and to have a thermos of hot tea. As a proud member of the Blaine / Mars Hill community, George loved his hometown and took great pride in helping his neighbors whenever possible. George E. Hardgrove Sr. is survived by his wife, Vida; son, George Jr. and daughter-in-law, Kelly, and granddaughter, Caitlyn of Bangor; his daughter Michel M. King and son-in-law, William M. King, and grandsons, Walker and Jackson of Atlanta; and sisters, Clara Kinny of Blaine and Josephine Lowrey of Florida. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, at East Blaine Cemetery with Pastor Lawrence Beals officiating. Arrangements in care of Duncan Funeral Home, 8 Main St., Mars Hill.
