HAMPDEN – Vern Harold Simpson, 88, died Oct. 16, 2010, at a Bangor health care center. He was born July 30, 1922, in Bangor, son of Vern and Lena E. (Stratton) Simpson. Vern was a 1940 graduate of Bangor High School. He married his first wife, Carolyn Snow, in 1944, and his second wife, Mary Fernald, in 1974. Vern had been employed by Wade White Electrical, Carl Snow’s Garage, Bean & Conquest, Darling’s, Downeast Toyota, Quirk, Cars-R-Us, Quirk’s Hogan Road and retired from Subaru in 1986. He loved working in the garage. He had excellent mechanical abilities and was an inventor by sorts. He could make things from scrap that amazed everyone. Vern spent hours working on his old tractors to keep them running. It was a challenge he enjoyed. He was also an avid gardener and landscaper. Vern was a member of Bangor Grange No. 372, Y Squares and Whirling 8’s. Vern was a Christian living person and a devoted, loyal and loving husband. He loved his family. He worked very hard and did every job the very best he could and took pride in what he did. He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Mary (Fernald) Simpson of Hampden. They shared a love that will never end. He is also survived by his son, Richard Vern Simpson and his wife, Pam, of Hampden; his grandson, Kevin Scott Simpson and his wife, Jennifer Lynn, of East Waterboro; his granddaughter, Kimberly Jean Simpson of Lisbon; his great-granddaughter, Hailey Christian Young of East Waterboro; his great-grandson, Gregory Scott Simpson of Lisbon; many cousins and extended family members. Vern was loved by all. He had such a wonderful smile and sense of humor. Vern was predeceased by his parents; his first wife, Carolyn Simpson; daughter, Loyce Jean Moores; and unborn granddaughter, Tricia. The family gives a very special thanks to the staff at Stillwater Healthcare for their excellent care and loving, thoughtful devotion. They also thank all the staff at Hospice of Eastern Maine and the wonderful neighbors and people of Hampden. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Philip Mumford, pastor of First Assembly, Bangor, officiating. Friends are welcome to call 1 p.m. Wednesday until the time of service. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments immediately after the service Wednesday at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor. Interment will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Bangor.
