WINTERPORT – Samuel G. Butler Jr., 69, passed away unexpectedly Oct. 22, 2010, at his home. A lifelong resident of Winterport, Sam was born there April 1, 1941, the son of Samuel G. and Emma (Bowden) Butler Sr. Sam was a graduate of Winterport High School, Class of 1959, and was an active member of the community his entire life. He was a member of Winterport Volunteer Ambulance and Fire Department, a Winterport town selectman for more than 20 years, assistant fire warden, a Winterport Cemetery sexton, Neighborhood Food Cupboard member, member of Waldo County Budget Committee and member of Garfield Odd Fellows Lodge No. 99 for 50 years. Sam was the owner of S.G. Butler Cemetery Memorials, a family business he had worked in all of his life. He had also worked at St. Regis Paper Mill, Bucksport, for 17 years and for the state of Maine Department of Transportation for seven years. Sam enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, playing cards and spending time with family and friends. Sam is survived by his wife of 50 years, Donna E. (Ward) Butler of Winterport; son, Mike and wife, Denise, of Winterport; daughter, Sharon and husband, Wayne Quimby, of Winterport; son, Dean and wife, Julie, of Hampden; daughter, Suzanne and husband, Barry Fields, of Winterport; daughter, Wendy and husband, Mike Beal, of Otis; grandchildren, Michael, Nicholas, Josh, Jeremy, Ben, Ren?e, Lindsey, Katelyn, Wyatt and Alexis; great-grandchildren, Jaden, Amara and Mackenzie; sisters, Martha Alexander and Gladys Lynch; half sister, Mary Jane Adams; and half brother, Charles Rancourt. Sam was predeceased by two grandchildren, Michelle and Emily; and six sisters, Elizabeth, Hazel, Gweneth, Beatrice, Rebecca and Emma. Family and friends may visit 4-7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, where a funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 25, with Pastor Steve Nute officiating. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Winterport. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Sam’s honor may be made to Winterport Volunteer Fire and Ambulance, P.O.
