PORTLAND, Maine — The project to extend Maine’s Amtrak Downeaster service from Portland to Brunswick is going to be slowing traffic in downtown Portland.

Portland officials say supplies are going to be delivered on Wednesday and it is expected to cause significant traffic delays at four city railroad crossings.

The work is expected to begin around noon Wednesday and last until about 6 p.m.

The areas expected to be hit the hardest include Allen Avenue, Read and Walton streets, Forest Avenue at Woodfords Corner and Congress Street.

The $38 million construction project between Portland and Brunswick is expected to be completed by the fall of 2012.
