BANGOR, Maine — The last time it snowed on Halloween in the Queen City was 2001, according to the National Weather Service in Caribou.

Most of the first snow of the season that fell in Penobscot, Piscataquis and part of Waldo counties Sunday morning melted when it hit the pavement, but 2 inches accumulated in the Wellington and East Sangerville areas, said NOAA meteorologist Tim Dada.

It was sunny but cold in Aroostook County and raining along the coast and in southern Maine, he said about 11 a.m. Sunday.

The snow was expected to taper off before dark but temperatures in the low 30s most likely would mean trick-or-treaters’ costumes would be worn over snowsuits and mittened hands would be clutching Halloween buckets and bags.

Dada predicted it would warm up Monday with temperatures reaching the high 30s in northern Maine and the low 40s inland and along the coast.
