BANGOR – Paul Martin, 89, died peacefully Oct. 29, 2010, after a period of declining health. He was born May 5, 1921, in Madawaska, the eighth of 15 children to Denis and Alphonsine (Raymond) Martin. He enjoyed his youth and young adult years in Madawaska prior to moving his young family to Bangor in 1954. He called Bangor home the rest of his life. He had a strong work ethic, working many years as a carpenter, even into his 80s. In addition he volunteered for many years with Ostomy Association of Eastern Maine and St. Mary’s Parish. He remained proud of his Acadian heritage, recounting history to friends and family. He was endowed with a charming, generous nature, and was a lover of life, family, people, storytelling, humor and traveling. His smile won peoples’ hearts. He will be dearly missed. He is survived by children, Madeleine, Peter and Rosemarie Martin; grandchildren, Lucas Martin and his wife, Laurie, Megan McLaughlin and her boyfriend, Chris Cory, Sarah Gray and her fiance, Will Richards, Adam Martin, Sophie Gray and Keelin Martin; brothers, Normand Martin and his wife, Pat, and Raynald Martin and his wife, Jennie; a sister, Dolores Hayes and her husband, Gene; many cousins, nephews and nieces, including a special goddaughter, Andrea Haskell; great-nephews and great-nieces. He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Georgette (Lajoie), in 1974; brothers, Patrick, Leonard, Armand, Louis, Onias and Adrien; sisters, Marie Mae, Rose, Rita – Sister M. Gerard, Therese – Sister M. Celine, and Raymonde; and nephew, Robert. The family expresses their gratitude for the loving care Paul received from staff at Freese’s Assisted Living, St. Joseph Hospital and particularly Bangor Rehabilitation and Nursing Center during his final year. Friends may call 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 300 State St., Bangor, where a memorial service will be held 3 p.m. with the Rev. Roland Nadeau officiating.
