FALMOUTH — It was supposed to be a battle of two of the top defenses in the state, but it was Scarborough’s that really stood out.

The Red Storm showed why it had only allowed one goal all season while generating just enough offense to earn its first Class A girls soccer title with a 3-0 triumph over Bangor at Falmouth High School on Saturday afternoon.

Coach Mike Farley’s club was in control right from the outset, as the Storm had the Rams pinned in their defensive end early and often. Bangor couldn’t get a shot on net through the first 40 minutes as Scarborough built a 2-0 lead.

Sarah Little set up Scarborough’s first goal with a high, arching corner kick from the far side of the field, and Emma Bagley, who was unmarked in front of the goal, tapped the ball in at the near post with 20:53 left in the first half.

Scarborough would score again 1:37 before halftime, with Cortney Hughes blasting in a rebound with a low laser into the left side of the goal.

Tori Armishaw started the sequence with a free kick from the right side of the penalty area, which the Rams’ Mia Smith stuffed, but the rebound came out to an unmarked Hughes, who had a wide-open left side of the goal to shoot in.

The Red Storm, who capped off a perfect season at 18-0, got their final goal with 33:49 to go in regulation, with Little knocking home an Armishaw cross.

Bangor’s opportunities were limited at best, and one of its best came early in the second half as Kim Jordan broke in down the right flank, but she was unable to get a shot off.

The only goal Scarborough has given up all season came on a penalty kick, and the Red Storm’s back line did a good job of neautralizing Bangor’s speed by beating the Rams to 50-50 balls and quickly clearing away any passes down the middle of the field.

The Rams, who were playing in a state final for the first time since 2005, finished the season 16-1-1. Smith had seven saves on 18 shots for coach Joe Johnson’s club.

Jill Deering saved three of seven shots for Scarborough.
