OLD TOWN and TACOMA, Wash. – Marie “Alice” Lillian Gray Cummings, 79, passed away Nov. 17, 2010, surrounded by her family in Tacoma, Wash., after a lengthy illness. Alice was born May 28, 1931, in Old Town, to parents Marie A. Madore and Charles Herman Gray. Alice attended Treat & Webster School, St Joseph’s Catholic School and graduated from Old Town High School in 1949. Her community work included working at the voting booths in Tacoma, Wash., and she volunteered her time at St. Ann’s and Fern Hill schools in Washington state. She was a devout, traditional Catholic and a member of St. Mary’s Traditional Catholic Church, Tacoma, Wash., and St. Jean Baptiste Society. Alice is remembered most for her deep faith, sense of humor and generous spirit. Giving to those less fortunate was a way of life for Alice. She put the needs of others before her own and will be missed by many. Alice worked at Morin & Co. while in high school. She also worked at Winslow Hall at the University of Maine, Orono, until 1954. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert F. Cummings; her parents; stepfather, Edmond Guay; and her brother, Herbert Guay and his wife, Sharon. She is survived by her children: daughters, Roberta F. Cummings Quante of Boston, Paula Marquis and her spouse, Gilbert, of Old Town, Karen Cummings Karlstadt of Orrs Island and Norma O’Malley and her spouse, Larry Brown, of Federal Way, Wash., and son, Michael Cummings of Dupont, Wash.; grandchildren, Alex Quante and his wife, Tina, of Puyallup, Wash., Amy Starkey of Winterport, David Starkey of Old Town, Alicea Bursey and her husband, Steve, of Goshen, N.H., and Robert Carlstad of Orrs Island; great-grandchild, Abigail Quante of Puyallup, Wash.; her siblings, Laura Marquis of Old Town, Edmond “Gussie” Guay and his wife, Helen, of Pensacola, Fla., Gloria Lozier and her husband, Fredrick, of New Hampshire and Florida, and Gilbert Guay and his wife, Sharon, of Bangor; and special mention of her lifelong friends, Beatrice Doanne of Orono, Virginia Haywood of Tacoma, Wash., and Shirley Davis of California. A rosary and funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at St. Mary’s Traditional Catholic Church, Tacoma, Wash.
