SCARBOROUGH – Joseph G. Kelley Jr., 86, of Piper Shores, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010, at his residence. He was born in Bangor, the son of Joseph G. Sr. and Mary Josephine Candellari Kelley. He attended Bangor schools and graduated from Shead Memorial High School, Eastport, Class of 1941. Oct. 24, 1945, Joseph married his beloved wife, Virginia L. (Barnes) Kelley. He also was a graduate of LaSalle Extension University in 1955 with a major in accounting. They resided in Eastport and Caribou for several years, where Joe was a plant controller for the Birdseye Division of General Foods Corp., Caribou, and later moved to Portland where he was chief financial officer for the former Jordan’s Meat Co., and retired as chairman and CEO. He was a communicant of St. Maximillian Kolbe Catholic Church, Scarborough, where he was very active as a Sacristan and Eucharistic minister. While in Caribou he was very active in Holy Rosary Catholic Church, where he worked alongside of his wife during the First Bishop’s Campaign for three years. He was a longtime member of Portland Kiwanis Club. Joe will be remembered as a gentleman who thought of others before self. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, July 5, 2006; and a sister, Josephine. He leaves a sister, Mary Elizabeth-Bette Lyden of Brunswick; a special nephew, Charles and his wife, Donna Barnes, of Caribou; great-nephews, Kevin and Darren Barnes of Caribou; close friends, Normand and his wife, Lorraine Beliveau, of Scarborough; five nieces and three nephews. Visiting hours will be held 4-7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland, where prayers will be recited 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 29, with a concelebrated Mass of Christian burial 10 a.m. at St. Maximillian Kolbe Catholic Church, Scarborough. Graveside services will be held noon Tuesday, Nov. 30, at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor.
