ASHLAND – Alphonse J. Chalou passed away Friday, Dec. 3, 2010, in Presque Isle. He was born Dec. 21, 1914, in Ashland, the son of Paul and Rosalie (Theriault) Chalou. Alphonse was employed for many years by Great Northern Paper Co. as a grader operator. He was very active in St. Mark’s Catholic Church, and was the last surviving charter member of Knights of Columbus, Ashland Council 2889, as a fourth degree knight. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 61 years, Evangeline (Tardie) Chalou; two great-grandchildren, Michael Izzo and Dylan McCarthy; brothers, Edmond and Victor Chalou; sister, Phoebe (Chalou) Jimmo; and nephew, Adre Chalou. He is survived by his children, Rodney Chalou and his wife, Sylvia, of Masardis, Donna and her husband, Mike Regan, of Ellington, Conn., Neil Chalou of Ashland, Terry Chalou and his wife, Barbara, of Easton, Susan Chalou of Manchester, Conn., and Douglas Chalou of Windsor, Conn.; 10 grandchildren, Kim, Kevin, Tina, Troy, Terry, Ricky, Rene, Aron, Marcel and Robert; and 14 great-grandchildren. Alphonse leaves a special niece, Annette Couture of New Hampshire; special nephews, Carlton Jimmo of Virginia and Don Tardie of Ashland; the extended Chalou/Tardie family; special friends, Sonny O’Clair, Dick Thombs and Henry Akeley; and a host of friends. Relatives and friends may call 2-6 p.m. Sunday and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Monday at Stimson-Ouellette Funeral Home, 114 Exchange St., Ashland. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Ashland.
