BLUE HILL – Fernald William Robertson passed away Nov. 30, 2010, in Blue Hill, after a brief battle with bladder cancer. Fern was born Oct. 30, 1925, in Blue Hill, the son of Walter T. and Jennie M. (Herrick) Robertson. In 1944 he went in the U.S. Navy, the same year he graduated from George Stevens Academy. He served in World War II as a gunner’s mate on the USS Montauk, from January 1944 to May 1946. On Oct. 20, 1956, he married Peggy Snow. They raised two children, Lynne and Barry, in their Greene’s Hill home. He worked as a plumber for 35 years and a caretaker for 10 years. Fern was a 50-year member of Blue Hill Fire Department, serving with many members of his family. Always a loyal friend, he would have his hat on and be out the door if someone ever called needing his help. Fern was an avid sportsman during his life, enjoying hunting, fishing, scuba diving, water-skiing, golfing and lobstering. He loved cutting wood and spending time in the outdoors. In the later years, he enjoyed tending to their blueberry fields in North Sedgwick and feeding his fish. Fern, Peg and their best friends, Don and Joyce Bisset, made annual trips together during the 1990s, exploring Canada, Vermont, Maine and Pennsylvania. In 1992 his hunting buddies had their last year together at camp on Toddy Pond, marking 50 years of tradition, which continues today with the next generation. He leaves his wife of 56 years, Peg; daughter, Lynne Clark and her husband, Tim, and son, Barry; nephews and their families, Dennis, Bruce and Joel; and niece, Cynthia. He also leaves “No. 2 son,” John Herrick; and “No. 3 son,” Davey Williams. He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Gerald Robertson; sister, Dorothy Chamberlain; nephew, Reggie Chamberlain; and best friend, Donald Bisset. Many thanks to Dennis and Davey for all of their support. Thanks to caregivers Holly and Rhonda. A celebration of life and committal service will be held next spring.
