PATTEN – Robert D. Smallwood, 82, passed away Dec. 2, 2010, at a Millinocket hospital. He was born May 7, 1928, to George and Susan (Giles) Smallwood. Bob married Jeanne Porter Smallwood, Oct. 23, 1951. Bob was known for his love of a great joke; when he had a good one he told it many times. He was hardworking and took awesome care of his wife and family. When he became a “Grampie,” he let everyone know he was Bob. He was an avid gardener and supplied us all with many veggies, especially corn. The one condition was we better have the water boiling if we were going have his fresh corn. He loved to hunt and was a registered Maine guide. He hunted with his son and many of his grandkids, and also every year with a special group of friends that he made sure we all knew that he was the cook for the group. He loved to make muffins and was always throwing in some surprise ingredient. He was famous for his pickles and apple cake. Oh yes, and his turnip. Some of us can remember our first plane ride in his plane and what a ride it was. He loved us all so much and showed us by helping us around our homes – fixing pipes, furnaces and so many more things. He was proud of all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He passed on his love of hunting, fishing, cooking, gardening and storytelling to us all. He taught us to use humor to get through the tough times. He was an awesome man. We are proud to call him husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be missed and remembered by many. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Jeanne Porter Smallwood; his children: son, Kent Smallwood and wife, Lorie, and daughters, Barbara Mitchell and husband, Wally, Linda Smith and husband, Randy, Julie Buhler and husband, Bryan, and Gail Douston and husband, Shawn; his grandchildren, Keith Mitchell Sr. and wife, Nicole, Jeff Mitchell and wife, Amanda, James Mitchell and wife, Kimberly, Crystal Mitchell and fiance, Kevin O’Roak, Tasha Khan and husband, Sajjad, Kent Smallwood and fiancee, Crystal McLain, Melissa Allen Carr, Heather Burton, Craig Smith and wife, Tara, Michael Trask, Meredith Trask, Lindsay Riedel, Hillary Riedel, Hannah Buhler, Jacob Buhler, Erin Buhler, Tiffany Berry, Logan Douston, Garth Douston and Blake Douston; his great-grandchildren, Keith, Bradley, Ethan, Olivia and Isabelle Mitchell, Amman Khan, Nicholas and Evelyn Carr, Matthew and Ava Smith, Ariana, Harleigh and William Riedel; sisters-in-law, Judy Smallwood, Annie Jane Smith, Elizabeth Porter and Leithia Porter; brother-in-law, Raymond Porter; many special nieces and nephews.
