FLORIDA and PRESQUE ISLE – Elizabeth Giberson Coffey, 90, passed away Dec. 2, 2010, in Zephyrhills, Fla. “Betty,” as she was known to family and friends, was born Oct. 23, 1920, in Castle Hill. She graduated from Presque Isle High School, then married her lifelong partner, Glendon E. Coffey, Dec. 24, 1940, achieving nearly 70 years of married life. Among her accomplishments, besides family, was her commitment to a strong work ethic, having retired from University of Maine, Presque Isle, after 17 years of service. Also, she was devoted to her beloved church. She was a member of Zephyrhills United Methodist Church for the past 16 years, prior to which she was a member of Pleasant Street United Methodist Church, Waterville, with her home church being Grant Memorial Methodist Church, Presque Isle. Mrs. Coffey’s legacy could best be described as always having a smile for everyone, including strangers. She enjoyed helping people, having worked as a volunteer for HPH hospice for several years during her active retirement. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother with a charitable spirit. She will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known her. Her presence in this world made it a better place for all of us. She is survived by her husband; a son, G. William Coffey; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Betty Coffey will be held noon Friday, Dec. 10, at First United Methodist Church, Zephyrhills, Fla.
