MATTAWAMKEAG – Donald C. Smart, 90, husband of Hazel (Reed) Smart, passed away Dec. 6, 2010, at a Lincoln hospital. He was born June 28, 1920, at Eagle Lake, son of Clarence Joseph and Elizabeth Jane (McDonald) Smart. Donald was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942 and was attached to the 175th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division, later the 5th Ranger Battallion, in the European Theatre. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. He was discharged in 1945 and settled in Mattawamkeag. In addition to his wife of 64 years, Hazel, he is survived by his children, David and Lois Smart of Mattawamkeag, Ruth and Wade Philbrick of Greenbush, and Vicki and Marty Brown of Carmel; grandson, Doug Smart of Fairbanks, Alaska; granddaughters, Toni and David Poll of Hudson, and Jennifer Philbrick of Greenbush; great-grandson, Hunter Poll of Hudson; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Sandra Troutt and husband, Jimmy, of Sherman. He also leaves his cat, Peanut, a Maine coon cat. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Helene Milson and Bernice Bragdon; a brother, Elgin Smart; half brothers, Sam Morrison and Walter Bridges; and half sisters, Vergie Morrison and Madeline McLeod. A celebration of life will be held 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. Private family burial service will be at a later date at Mattawamkeag Cemetery.
