WINTHROP and ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. – Francis “Frank” John Westrack, 69, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta, after a short and courageous battle with cancer. Frank was born Aug. 28, 1941, in Queens, N.Y., to Francis and Grace Kelly Westrack. He was a graduate of Huntington High School, Huntington, Long Island, N.Y. Frank then went on to serve in the U.S. Air Force for eight years. During his military service he completed a year of college at London University in England, and then continued his schooling at the University of Maine at Machias, where he received his bachelor’s degree in elementary education. After graduation he became a teaching principal at Fort O’Brien School, Machiasport, a position he held for 15 years. Frank also served on the Machias School Board from 1981 to 1988, during which he held the title of chairman from 1982 to 1988. In 1985, he pursued a new career with the Maine Department of Corrections at Downeast Correctional Facility, Bucks Harbor. The next year he was promoted to director of classifications in Augusta, a position he served until his retirement in 2004. Among his colleagues, Frank was known as the man who always came in whistling with a smile on his face. He loved his work and those he worked with and for. Outside of work Frank enjoyed painting, photography and the game of golf, but his true passion was tennis. He frequented the theater and thoroughly enjoyed get-togethers with family and friends. Frank had a zest for life and always considered his cup half full. Predeceasing Frank was his mother, father; and twin brother, James Westrack. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Nancy Topping-Westrack of Winthrop; his stepmother, Fannie Westrack of Long Island, N.Y.; his daughter, Kelly Jessiman and her husband, Walter, of Cutler; and his son, Kevin Westrack and his wife, Marcia, of Calais. He was also a loving and devoted grandfather of four, Britni, Aaron, Romayn and Kristen. Frank will be dearly missed by many family members, friends and colleagues. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 10, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 130 Route 133, Winthrop, with the Rev. Francis Morin, celebrant, with a reception after next to the church at St. Francis Parish Hall. Interment with full military honors will be held 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel at the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, donations in Frank’s memory may be made to his beloved Betmar Acres Tennis Club, care of Betmar Acres Mobile Home Park, 37145 Lakewood Drive, Zephyrhills, FL 33541. Arrangements are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop.
