ORRINGTON – Louine Mercie (Spinney) Cotter, 91, passed away Dec. 10, 2010, at a Bangor health care facility, after a yearlong illness. She was born Aug. 29, 1919, in Orrington, the daughter of Charles O. and Mercie A. (Conley) Spinney. Louine graduated in 1937 from Brewer High School, where she was a cheerleader. She married her childhood sweetheart, William A. Cotter, in March 1941, and enjoyed 66 years together until his death in 2007. Being a Navy family, they lived in many different states, including Florida, California, Maryland and Maine. Her places of employment included Julie Comforter Co., Holyoke, Mass.; Coutures Gardens, Westfield, Mass.; Orrington Jet Diner; Emery – Waterhouse/Rice and Miller Co., Bangor; Freese’s department store; and Corner Cupboard, Bangor. She was a member of Orrington Vashti Rebekah’s and Orrington Corner Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir. One of her many talents was her beautiful singing voice. She portrayed Patsy Cline in the Nashville Come to Orrington Show in the 1980s. She also played the piano, was a beautiful seamstress and had made several quilts. She was an excellent cook and was famous for her Swedish meatballs, her Italian spaghetti and her wonderful apple pies. Playing Scrabble was another one of her favorite pastimes. She was a wonderful, loving, mother and grandmother and was dearly loved. She is survived by her children, Dianne Levesque and her husband, Robert, of Winslow, Wilfred Cotter of Brewer and Ellen Cotter of Nokomis, Fla.; grandchildren, Richard Cotter Jr., Tracy Adkins, Michael Levesque, Monte Levesque, Matthew Levesque, Benjamin Levesque, Mark Cotter, Jody Croft, Andrew Hillman, Amanda Hillman, Luke Demmons and Chiyanne Cotter; 17 great-grandchildren, one unborn great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; and a special sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and John Buckingham of South Carolina. She was predeceased by her husband, William Cotter, in December 2007; and her son, Richard Cotter, in April 2007. The family thanks the staff of Bangor Nursing and Rehabilitation and Beacon Hospice for their care and support. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Dean Hill Cemetery, Orrington.
