SOUTHWEST HARBOR – Walter V. Hanscom, 73, died Dec. 10, 2010, in Bar Harbor. He was born Jan. 6, 1937, in Bar Harbor, the son of Albert and Dorothy M. (Bragg) Hanscom. Walter served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee. He owned and operated White Birches Campground for many years and worked for Southwest Harbor Public Works. Walter enjoyed puttering in his shop, fishing, boating and snowmobiling. He is survived by his wife of five years, Ann “Mackey” Wentworth of Southwest Harbor; her children, William and wife, Alison, of Texas, Rachael Wark of Southwest Harbor and Angela Torell and husband, Timothy, of Michigan; brother, Raymond Hanscom and wife, Jean, of Southwest Harbor; sisters, Connie Jellison of Bar Harbor and Ada Hatch and husband, Urban, of Salisbury Cove; many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Pamelia Rodick of Bar Harbor; a brother, Dale; and sister, Kathleen. Calling hours will be held 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Southwest Harbor.
