MARS HILL – Harold W. Howlett, 80, died Dec. 14, 2010, surrounded by his family at his home, after a long illness. He was born June 16, 1930, in Westfield, son of Elmer and Muriel Howlett. Harold was a very hard worker and had many jobs throughout his life. He retired after many years of service in the state of Maine Department of Labor. Harold has always been active in the community and was a dedicated donor to the many causes that helped organizations and people in need. He was a lifelong member of United Baptist Church, Mars Hill. Harold married Betty J. Orser, Oct. 18, 1948, until she went home to heaven May 17, 2001. He was predeceased by his parents; as well as a sister, Phyllis Sullivan; and a special son-in-law, Tony Blanchard. He is survived by three brothers and two sisters, Bernard Howlett and wife, Ramona, of Presque Isle, Ronald Howlett and wife, Betty, of New York, Winston Howlett of Easton, Jean Kane of Surry, and Lorraine Daggatt of Gilford. He will be greatly missed by his two sons, Pete Howlett of Delaware, and Paul Howlett and wife, Amy, of Mars Hill; and four daughters, Diana Pottle and husband, Anthony, of Mars Hill, Bonnie Blanchard of Mars Hill, Debbie Howlett of Mars Hill and Barbara Howlett of Mars Hill. Thirty-eight grandchildren and great-grandchildren complete his very large family. Near and dear to him was a special daughter-in-law, Lucy Howlett of Delaware; and a very special member of the family, Nancy Grant of Mars Hill. We, the children of Harold Howlett, want to say to all of you that our parents were an outstanding example of hardwork, high morals, kindness, forgiveness and family love. We learned to be who we are today from their example and will strive to instill the same values in our children and grandchildren. No words can express how much they were loved and respected. We can rest now knowing that they are together again and in heaven with their God and pain free. We know they are watching over all of us and when we look to the sky we will see them as our own shining stars. We also express a heartfelt thank you to all who prayed for Dad and helped in any way they could. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, at Duncan Funeral Home, Mars Hill, where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, with Pastor Paul Howlett, Pastor Victor Hartley and Pastor Richard Bell, presiding.
