BANGOR – Mary Ann “Mame” Greenlaw Gardner, 62, died peacefully Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, at her home, after a long, brave battle with ovarian cancer. Mame was born Aug. 30, 1948, to Claude and Anna Greenlaw of Island Falls. After graduating from Island Falls High School, she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maine, Orono. She enjoyed a 34-year teaching career, all at Asa Adams Elementary School, Orono. Mame was known for her spunk, humor, energy and creativity. An avid crafter, she developed skills that she shared with her sister and friends in basketry, knitting and home decorating. The summers were spent gardening and having fun at the family camp on Pleasant Pond. She had a passion for travel and adventure that took her to Ireland, France, Florida’s Marco Island, the western U.S. and Hawaii. Beyond teaching, she was active in St. Mary’s parish, Orono, and relished working summers on Star Island. She is survived by two daughters, Susan Gardner of Brewer and Sara Miller of Orono and her husband, David, and their children, Isaac and Carmen; her sister, Jane Fox and family of Denver; her former husband, Steve Gardner of Sedona, Ariz.; beloved nephews and nieces; many cousins in “the County” and beyond; the Big Dogs; and several special friends. A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. After the service relatives and friends are invited to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor. A service with interment will be held in Island Falls at a later date.
