BREWER – Philip G. Patten, 96, died peacefully Dec. 31, 2010, at a Bangor nursing facility, where he was a resident for the past 14 months. He was born March 29, 1914, in Ellsworth, the eighth child of Clifford and Mary (Maddocks) Patten. Philip attended Ellsworth schools, graduating from Ellsworth High School in 1934. He married Margaret Hilton Kemp of Ellsworth, Oct. 6, 1940. He was a member of Masonic Lodge, Ellsworth, Eastern Star and Bayside Grange, and was a communicant of First Congregational Church of Brewer. Philip served in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre during World War II, and was stationed in England and Italy. Upon his return from the military he worked as a cook at various locations, and he and his wife operated Sun Diner, Ellsworth, for several years. Phil was a very enthusiastic square dancer and he and Margaret danced at various places in Maine and Canada. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Phil was predeceased by his two sisters, Tessie and Irene; and five brothers, Maurice, Elwood, Earlon, Robert and Harry. A service of remembrance will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer, with the Rev. Grace Bartlett, pastor of First Congregational Church of Brewer, officiating. Private interment will be held this spring at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth.
