FRANKFORT – Wayne P. Perkins, 78, husband of Rita M. (Jackson) Perkins, died Dec. 27, 2010, at his home. He was born Oct. 1, 1932, in Castine, son of Donald and Beulah (Sawyer) Perkins. Wayne was a 1950 graduate of Castine High School and a 1953 graduate of Maine Maritime Academy. He worked for American Export Lines Inc., as a merchant seaman from the early 1950s to the early 1970s on numerous ships as a third assistant engineer. He also served with the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1957 as an engineering officer. After his shipping career, Wayne worked for St. Regis Paper, Bucksport, for 17 years and retired from Champion Paper, Bucksport, in 1994. Wayne was an avid hunter. He and his wife, Rita, shot many deer from their tree stand out in “The Square” in Castine. Surviving, in addition to his wife of Frankfort, are two brothers, Donis Perkins of Connecticut and Russell Perkins of Los Angeles; and five stepchildren, Patricia Lambert, Joanne Buzzell, Robert Cunningham, Michael Cunningham and Steven Cunningham. He was predeceased by one sister, Evelyn “Lea” Perkins. A graveside service will be held in Castine at a date and time to be announced in the spring.
