STEUBEN, KITTERY and DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. – Capt. Ora “Red” Rhoades, 83, passed away Jan. 4, 2011, in Port Orange, Fla. He was born Oct. 31, 1927, in Calais, son of Ora Rhoades and Bessie Leighton Rhoades. Red attended schools in Topsfield and Steuben. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Merchant Marines, from which he retired after 50 years. He was predeceased by his parents; his older brother, Harry; and his stepfather, Herm Sawyer. In addition to his younger brother, Vaughn, Red is survived by Pamela Dodge and her husband, Brian, and daughter, Amy K; Kim Kelley Kirby and her husband, Paul, and sons, Nicholas, Matthew and Andrew; Kim Simpson and her son, Jonathan; and William Rhoades. Private services will be held this summer in Steuben and Kittery. In lieu of flowers and donations, please seek out an unsung hero and thank him or her for their service. “Red has gone sailing.”
