AUSTIN, Texas – Stuart W. Bruchey, 93, passed away peacefully Dec. 20, 2010, due to pneumonia in Austin, Texas. He was born Aug. 6, 1917, in Washington, D.C., to Nellie and Walter Bruchey. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor, whom he was married to for 54 years; sons, Andrew and Samuel; daughters-in-law, Aleksandra and Lisa; and four cherished grandchildren, Luka, Sofia, Ana and Sammy. He graduated from McDonogh School, Pikesville, Md., and received his Bachelor of Arts degree and doctorate from Johns Hopkins University. He went on to a distinguished teaching career, culminating in the Allan Nevins professorship at Columbia University. After retirement he continued teaching as a Libra professor at the University of Maine, Orono. He loved teaching and writing, and was devoted to his students. We will miss his warmth, lively wit and his steadfast commitment to hard work, honesty and doing the right thing. We will hold him in our hearts forever.
