ELLSWORTH – Lawrence L. Collier, 88, died Jan. 10, 2011, at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born March 15, 1922, in Fosterville, New Brunswick, the son of Leslie and Verma (Varney) Collier. Lonnie was in the U.S. Army and served in the European Theater. He married Inez V. Wood in 1946. He was employed by New England Telephone Co. for 10 years before owning and operating different businesses for 30 years. He later took over the ownership of Collier’s Nursing Home from his mother. Lonnie was a founder of Trenton Volunteer Fire Department and was a deputy for Hancock County Sheriff’s Department. He was an active member of Ellsworth Lions Club, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Lygonia Masonic Lodge No. 40, AF & AM and belonged to the Scottish and York Rites and Anah Shrine. He is survived by his son, William L. Collier of Trenton; daughter, Elizabeth C. Whitney of Ellsworth; two grandsons, John J. Whitney IV “JJ” and Thomas E. Collier; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Inez; and brothers, Harold Collier and Earl “Midge” Collier. Calling hours will be held 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14.
