STOCKTON SPRINGS – Marlene Patricia Russell Light, 79, passed away Jan. 10, 2011, surrounded by her loving family at a Bangor hospital. She was born Oct. 15, 1931, in Bangor, the daughter of Wayne Russell and Edna (Keef). Marlene was a graduate of Bangor High School and then attended Ricker Junior College, University of Maine and Washington State Teachers College. Marlene taught for 30 years in public schools in Orono, Brewer and Searsport. In Searsport she was an elementary classroom teacher for 10 years and then became a special reading teacher. She also was assistant principal of the elementary school and central school in Searsport for 26 years. She retired in 1984 due to an illness. After she recovered, she became active in volunteer work. She was a member of the board of directors for Waldo County American Cancer Society and organized the county effort for Daffodil Days, Great American Smoke out and Love Lights a Tree for several years, in which she received their Clarabelle Conard Memorial Award. Marlene was a past volunteer for St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Carver Memorial Library, Stockton Springs Little League and Waldo County Retired Educator’s Association. She enjoyed doing things with her family and friends, breakfast out at Just Barb’s with her friends, camping, bridge, Marlene’s Ladies and actively followed her grandsons in sports. Marlene is survived by sons, Michael Light and his wife, Michele, of Searsport and Lawrence Light of Stockton Springs; grandsons, Jason Light and wife, Renee, and great-grandsons, Silas, all of Hermon, and Joseph Light and wife, Aimee, of Portland; two brothers, Ralph Russell and wife, Carol, and James Russell and wife, Colleen, all of Eddington; one sister, Patricia Begin and husband, Richard, of Oakland; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Russell of Bangor and Joan Light of Waldo; one brother-in-law, James Light and wife, Edith, of Bangor; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by husband, Franklin; her parents; her stepmother, Mary Frances Russell; brothers, John Russell, Richard Russell and Harold Russell and his wife, Roxanne; two sisters, Elizabeth Trask and Lucille Orcutt and brother-in-law, Tim Light; and nephew, Timothy Trask. Visitation for family and friends will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, at Young Funeral Home, 31 West Main St., Searsport, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday. Spring interment will be at Mount Prospect Cemetery, Stockton Springs.
