INDIAN TOWNSHIP – Eleanor Mary Mitchell, 70, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2011, at her home. Eleanor was born Oct. 5, 1940, in Indian Township, daughter of the late Lewey and Irene (Newell) Dana. After school she worked as a cook for Elderly Meal Site and then became a receptionist for Indian Township Tribal Government where she worked for more than 30 years. Eleanor was a communicant of St. Ann R.C. Church, Peter Dana Point, and held positions on various boards, including Indian Township School Board. She enjoyed playing bingo, board games, cards and watching Game Show Network. Eleanor’s most cherished moments were those spent with her family, especially around the holidays. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a son, Chester Newell; two sisters, Martha Barstis and Phyllis Saunders; and a brother, Kenneth Newell. Surviving are her five children, Dana Newell and his fiancee, Patty Mitchell, of Indian Township, Joseph Mitchell Jr. of Pleasant Point, Kathy Mitchell and her fiance, Mark Mitchell, of Indian Island, Betty Francis and her husband, Patrick, of Indian Township, and Myra Sabattus and her husband, Richard, of Indian Township; her siblings, Jeannette Parker, Robert Newell, and Stephen Newell and his wife, Audrey, all of Indian Township; two special grandchildren, Leeann Thornton, whom was like a daughter to her, and Trever Mitchell, who lived with her; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; her two “Beano Buddies,” Doris Chapman and Charlotte Glover; and her faithful canine companion, Princess. Visiting hours will begin 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14, at her residence, 74 U.S. Route 1, Indian Township, until 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by Father James Plourde 11 a.m. Monday at St. Ann R.C. Church, Peter Dana Point. Burial will be after at Tribal Cemetery.
