BANGOR – Virginia “Ginny” Burr Sucy passed Jan. 13, 2011, at her home. She was born Sept. 14, 1946, in Bangor, only child and beloved daughter of Woodrow W. and Dorothy (Bailey) Burr. She attended Old Town schools, graduating from Old Town High School in 1964 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Husson University in 1968. While at Husson, she was a member and president of Epsilon Tau Epsilon sorority and was named Outstanding Young Woman of the Class of 1968. She met her future husband and best friend, Ron, in ninth grade; and they were married June 17, 1967, in Old Town, during their senior year in college. Upon Ron’s discharge from the U.S. Army in 1970, they moved to Vermont where they lived for 20 years. Virginia taught at Hermon High School and at Bellows Free Academy, St. Albans, Vt.; Southern Vermont College and Mount Anthony Union High School, Bennington, Vt.; and spent the last 21 years of her career working with the very best colleagues, friends and students at Bangor High School. Her main interests were her family and friends, her career, dancing and animal rights. Ginny was an avid animal lover; and she, Ron and Ali integrated many strays and unwanted dogs and cats into their family. She most recently worked in the central Maine area to promote the ADOPT Specialty Animal Welfare License Plate. She was an advocate for all creatures who could not help themselves and spent many happy hours walking with her friends and canine companions in Prentiss Woods. She was raised in The First Church of Christ Scientist, Bangor, and attended services there and in Bennington, Vt. She was a member of United Methodist Church of Bennington, Vt. She also attended All Souls Congregational Church, Bangor. Ginny is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Ronald Sucy of Bangor and their beloved daughter, Alison Paige of Augusta; sisters-in-law, Harriet Sucy of Old Town and Judy Sucy of Oakland; aunts, Phyllis Hampel of Old Town and Roberta Burr of Framingham, Mass.; and close cousins, June Costain of Centerville, Tenn., Joe Hampel Jr. and wife, Karin, of West Chester, Pa., Lawrence Burr and wife, Faith, of Norfolk, Mass., Deborah Burr Richardson of Stowe, Mass., Fred Burr and wife, Sharon, of St. Charles, Ill., Michael Burr and wife, Linda, of Victor, N.Y., Ken Thibodeau and wife, Merleen, Jane Thibodeau, Nancy Thibodeau, and Barbara Hampel and husband, Greg Choquette, all of Old Town. She is also survived by Ken, Lorraine and Shawn Bloodsworth of Bradley, and Omer and Helen Begin of Pinellas Park, Fla.; and a special canine companion, Sadie. A very special appreciation goes out to the many close friends who brought such joy to her with their visits, calls, meals and concern. She was predeceased by her parents, Woodrow and Dorothy Burr; aunts, Virginia Bailey, Janette Thibodeau and Florence Burr Brown; uncles, Lawrence Burr and Carl Burr; parents-in-law, Irma and Kenneth Sucy; cousins, Gordon, R. Freeman, and Robert Thibodeau; and pets, Chummy, Lassie, Pierre, Toby, Fonzie, Vika, Cocoa, Bradley, Nickel, PJ, George and her precious Gizmo. Relatives and friends are invited to call 3-6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a celebration of life service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, with the Rev. Renee U. Garrett, minister of Christian Nurture, All Souls Congregational Church and Jacqueline MacDermott, First Reader, First Church of Christ Scientist, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments after the service at Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor. Interment will be at a later date at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.
