DADE CITY, Fla., and BREWER – Robert “Bob” S. Vittum died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2011, at Hospice House, Dade City, Fla. He was born Feb. 17, 1924, in Muskogee, Okla. He moved to Bryant Pond as a small boy with his family and graduated from Woodstock High School. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Air Force from 1943 to 1945. He flew 61 missions over Africa, Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, France, Greece and Italy. After the war he went to work for R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for 36 years, until his retirement in 1981. He moved to Florida after retirement, but continued to come to Maine in the summer. He spent many winters in Old Mexico and just loved every minute of it. He traveled a lot in his many motor homes, was an avid boater and a Scottish Rite Mason with Anah Temple, Bangor. Bob will be missed by his loving family and many, many wonderful friends. Bob was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy Littlefield Vittum, in 1976; his second wife, Mary Cormier Vittum, in 1998; his father, Benjamin and mother, Helen Cushman Vittum; brothers, Benjamin, who at 16 drowned in a skating accident, and Richard; and sisters, Elaine Vittum Keblers and Helen Vittum Doyen. He is survived by his loving wife, Elaine Onufer-Vittum of Dade City, Fla.; her four children, Kathy Whitman of Tampa, Fla., Laurie Onufer of Hillsboro, N.H., Mark Onufer and wife, Jayne, of South Salem, N.Y., and Janet Uzcategui and husband, Marco, of Seffuer, Fla.; three grandchildren, Terry Whitman Settle and husband, Patrick, and their daughter, Emily, Donald W. Whitman and wife, Gywnne, and Marco A. Uzcategui. Bob is survived by his only daughter, Deborah Bradley and husband, Dave, of Chandler, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Crystal Frazier and husband, Jeff, Melissa Templin and husband, Jim, and Michael Thurston and wife, Tracy; eight great-grandchildren, Ryan and Stephanie Frazier, Jeremy and Madison Templin, Steven, Alyssa, Alexis and Michaela Thurston, all of Niagara Falls, N.Y. He has three stepchildren by his wife, Mary, Patrick Cormier and wife, Terri, of Ellsworth, Pamela Cormier Callen and husband, Larry, of Oaklawn, Ill., and Paula Cormier Locke and husband, Gary, of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Paula’s son, Wesley Campbell and wife, Carolyn, and their daughter, Kathryn. There will be a graveside service in Brewer in June. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to HPH Hospice, 37441 Clinton Ave., Dade City, FL 33525.
