WINTERPORT and FRANKFORT – Beatrice “Betty” C. (Preston) Emerson, 88, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, at a Bangor hospital, after suffering a stroke. Beatrice was born Feb. 10, 1922, in Edmunds, to Jack and Beaulah Preston. The same year of Betty’s birth her family moved to Frankfort, where she was raised and graduated from Frankfort High School, Class of 1939. In her younger years she lived in Bangor while training to be a hairdresser, a profession that she loved and worked in for more than 70 years. She was an active member in Maine State Hairdressers Association and held an office in the Bangor Chapter. Betty was an active member in her community, including Cushing Chapter No. 69 Order of Eastern Star, and was named a life member in recent years; Sunrise Grange, Winterport; and was a faithful member of Frankfort Congregational Church, where she was a member of the Guild and a former deacon. She had many interests, including flower arranging, gardening, country music concerts and traveling, however more than anything she loved her family. She in return was loved for her adventuresome spirit, humor and way with words. Betty is survived by her stepsister, Faith Roberts of Belfast; three children, Robert Emerson and wife, Darlene, of Lakeside, Ore., Paul Emerson of Frankfort and Laurel Coulter and husband, Robert, of Winterport; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Betty was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Oliver, in 2001. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at Frankfort Congregational Church, Main Street, Frankfort, with Pastor Tim Hall officiating.
