WINTER HARBOR – Claranne Pitt, 86, died peacefully Jan. 22, 2011, at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born May 30, 1924, in South Gouldsboro, daughter of the late Kenneth S. and Abigail (Freeman) Hamilton, and beloved sister of the late Elizabeth Young. Claranne graduated from Winter Harbor High School, Washington State Normal School, Machias, and the University of Maine, Orono. She was a teacher for more than 25 years, dedicated to enriching the lives of children through education. She was an active member of numerous organizations, including Alcyone Chapter of Eastern Star; Acadian Community Women’s Club, Winter Harbor; Hancock County Retired Teachers Association and Gouldsboro Historical Society. She also served as a volunteer at Winter Harbor Library and as a member of Winter Harbor Elderly Housing Board. She is survived by her son, William E. Pitt Jr. of Winter Harbor; her daughter, Lorraine E. Crook and husband, David, of San Dimas, Calif.; nieces, Susan Webber and husband, Jon, of Blue Hill and Mary Flaum of Winter Harbor; and nephews, C. Richard Young and wife, Joyce, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and Keith Young of Winter Harbor. She was predeceased by a brother, Howell Hamilton. A memorial service and burial will be announced and held in the spring.
