TRENTON – Charles Elroy Hamor, 70, passed away Saturday, Jan. 23, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Oct. 16, 1940, in Bar Harbor, the son of Roger Carroll Hamor Sr. and Phyllis A. (Hamblen) Hamor.

Charlie graduated from Bar Harbor High School in 1959. Charlie was well known as a young boy for his appointment as the mascot of American Legion Post 25 Drum and Bugle Corp. He enjoyed hunting and was an avid gun collector. He owned and operated Parkadia Exxon for 12 years, where his sense of humor and gift for gab was at it’s best. Since his retirement as a gardener for the Rockefeller family in 2006, he has been self-employed as a caretaker for several summer people on Mount Desert Island.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Sheila I. Hamor of Trenton; his sister, Helen H. Paul and her companion, Woody Woodard, of Jacksonville, Fla.; and his daughter, Phyllis H. Leighton and her husband, Michael “Woody” Leighton, of Bar Harbor. Charlie loved being a grandfather and was very proud of his granddaughter, Katie Marie Leighton and his grandson, Kasey Allen Leighton, both of Bar Harbor. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Helen M. Hamor of Live Oak, Fla.; as well as many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by longtime friends; and his dog, Sandy. Charlie was predeceased by his parents; his first wife of 43 years, Donna L. (Fletcher) Hamor; his son, Charles “Chuck” H. Hamor; two sisters, Agnes H. McKinnon and Wilda H. Lakins; and three brothers, Roger C “Sonny” Hamor Jr., Howard W. Hamor and Lee Hamor.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at Church of Our Father, Hulls Cove, with the Rev. Mary-Carol Griffin officiating. There will be a spring interment at Mount Height Cemetery, Southwest Harbor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of his beloved granddaughter, Katie M.
