ELLSWORTH – John M. “Jack” Whitmore, 83, died Jan. 30, 2011, at Maine Veterans Home, Scarborough. He was born March 14, 1927, the only child of John and Pauline (Miller) Whitmore.

He grew up living on Verona Island and graduated from Bucksport High School in 1944. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army attached to the 504th Military Police Company in Germany during World War II. He was a member of the honor guard at the lying-in-state for the deceased Gen. George Patton in Heidelberg, Germany. He graduated in 1950 from the University of Maine, where he played baseball and basketball. He was a high school math teacher for 35 years, the last 31 at Ellsworth High School, from where he retired in 1985. He served as baseball coach, junior varsity boys’ basketball coach, athletic director and National Honor Society advisor as well, and continued to serve as a pitching coach after his retirement. Ellsworth High School honored him upon his retirement with the establishment of the John Whitmore Scholarship Fund. After his retirement from teaching, he enjoyed a second career as a park naturalist at Acadia National Park for 11 years.

He is survived by his daughter, Diane Whitmore of Portland; his son, Richard Whitmore and wife, Jacinta, and grandchildren, Brendan, Nathaniel and Marie of Lafayette, Calif.; and his son, William Whitmore and wife, Kay, and grandchildren, Abigail and Alex of Falmouth. He was predeceased by his parents; and by his wife, Charlotte Jordan Whitmore.

Visiting hours will be held 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, where funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4, with the Rev. Virginia Snapp-Cunningham officiating. Spring Interment will be at Silver Lake Cemetery, Bucksport.
