BANGOR – Richard “Dick” A. Simpson, 71, passed away peacefully Jan. 31, 2011, surrounded by his loving family at Togus Veterans Affairs Hospital, Augusta. He was born March 19, 1939, in Bangor, the son of Charles A. Simpson and Alice M. (Shaw) Simpson.

Dick graduated from Hermon High School in 1957 and served in the U.S. Navy. He was married for 52 years to Barbara E. (LePage) Simpson. Dick loved to garden and play poker with family and friends. He was an avid Red Sox and Boston Celtics fan. He was a supporter of his children and grandchildren in all of their sports and activities. Dick celebrated a golden 50th wedding anniversary party with family and friends. He had a tremendous willingness and ability to help anyone at anytime.

Dick was predeceased by his parents; and his son, Rick. In addition to his wife and best friend, Barbara Simpson, he is survived by his children, Joseph Simpson and his wife, Tracy, of Bangor, daughter-in-law, Dawn Simpson of Bangor, Charlie Simpson and his wife, Jennifer, of Bangor and Rhonda Byers and her husband, Alan, of Hermon; sisters, Jean Brown of Hermon and Harriet Bowden of Ellsworth; eight awesome grandchildren, Rebekah, Drew, Charlee, Ashlee, Erica, Ryan, Justin and Taylor; and two great-grandchildren, Madysen and Alice Simpson.

At Dick’s request, there will be no formal services. Gifts in memory of Dick may be sent to Bangor Veterans Affairs Clinic, 304 Hancock St., Bangor, ME 04401.
