HAMPDEN and BANGOR – Patricia Watson (Cheney) Dexter, 88, passed away peacefully Feb. 12, 2011, at a Bangor hospital. Patricia was born Oct. 7, 1922, in Bangor, daughter of Walter H. and Mabel (Watson) Cheney.
Patricia was a 1941 graduate of Hampden Academy and lived in Hampden for most of her life, before moving to Nason Park Manor, a place she loved very much. She was a tireless and dedicated worker for many years, beginning with First National Grocery Store and retiring from Shaw’s as store clerk. Patricia enjoyed following her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s recitals, games and various other events. In her spare time, Patricia loved to play games, particularly Beano and spend time with family. She was a lifelong member of the former Star in the East Chapter No. 17 Order of the Eastern Star, Hampden; and Whitcomb-Baker Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4633 Ladies Auxiliary, Hampden. Patricia will be remembered for her sense of humor and quick wit, and as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
Patricia is survived by her loving daughter, Teresa A. Gormely of Hampden; grandchildren, Tracey Murrell and husband, Paul, of Scarborough, Trudy Richards and husband, Russ, of Hampden, Kristi Swartz and husband, Mike, of Hermon, Emily Dexter of Bangor, Casey Dexter and William Dexter, both of Tucson, Ariz., and Lisa Pangburn and husband, Scott, of Dover-Foxcroft; 11 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Shannon of Tucson, Ariz.; several nieces and nephews. Patricia was predeceased by her son, Nelson “Skip” E. Dexter II; six siblings; a son-in-law, William “Bill” Gormely; and her longtime companion, E. Gibby Baker.
A memorial service celebrating Patricia’s life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, with the Rev. Mark Fowler officiating.
