HOULTON – After a long illness Clotilde “Clo” Chasse, 89, passed away Feb. 17, 2011, at a local health care facility. She was born July 27, 1921, in Edmunston, New Brunswick, the daughter of Wilbrod and Almida (Roy) Saindon.

She received her education at several private schools. In 1938, she participated in a college level essay contest sponsored by L’Academie Francaise of Paris, who were looking for writers in the French languages. She earned the first prize for Canada with her essay entitled “Ma Ville” – “My City.” Her prize was presented to her in Edmunston, New Brunswick, by the Count de Caix, president of L’Academie Francaise, who encouraged her to continue writing for L’Academie. Clo was a former officer in Daughters of Isabella, Columbus Guild, Catholic Woman, patroness of Madigan Hospital and Houlton Garden Club. Her favorite pastime was raising beautiful flowers. At one time she had more than 3,500 choice gladiola bulbs.

She is survived by her husband, Aurelien, with whom she celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. She will be missed by many relatives and several very close friends.

Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, at Bowers Funeral Home, 10 Water St., Houlton. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s of the Visitation, Houlton, with Father Clem Thibodeau, celebrant.
