BANGOR – Steven A. Butler, 49, died Feb. 19, 2011, at a Bangor hospital. He was born July 31, 1961, in Bangor, the son of Owen and Joyce (Evans) Butler.
Steve graduated from Bangor High School in 1979 and later graduated from Eastern Maine Vocational Technical Institute with a degree in wastewater management. During a long career as an environmental professional, Steve worked for many area municipalities and businesses, including more than 20 years of service to the city of Brewer Water Pollution Control Facility, where he was the lab manager at the time of his passing. In 2003 he received the honor of being named New England Operator of the Year. In 2008 Steve was honored to receive the Lee A. Agger Environmental Training Award for meritorious support and service in training environmental professionals in the state of Maine. From a young age, Steve loved the sport of harness horse racing. It was in his blood. He enjoyed placing the occasional wager – or two – had a wealth of knowledge of horses and trainers, and owned or co-owned several racehorses throughout the years. Steve was a loving father, brother, son, uncle and friend. He always enjoyed telling a good joke – over and over and over. He was formerly a deacon and moderator of Second Congregational Church, Brewer, where he also sang in the choir.
Steve is survived by his devoted daughter, Pauline of Hackettstown, N.J., and her mother, Leigh, of Bangor; his brother, William and wife, Jennifer, of Carlsbad, Calif.; his brother, Doug and wife, Jeanne, of Newport; his brother, Paul and wife, Angela, of Bangor; his brother, Wayne of Bedford, Va.; his sister, Shona Radan of Minooka, Ill.; several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles, and innumerable friends and co-workers.
