TROY – It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my beloved and devoted husband, Stephen Blaine Alley, who went home to be with the Lord Dec. 23, 2010, at UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica, Calif., with his loving and devoted wife, Linda; and his stepson, John, by his side, after a long and heroic battle with lung cancer and other medical issues. Steve left us the same way he lived his life, with pride, dignity and concern about others. He was born Jan. 7, 1941, in Beverly, Mass., the eldest son of the late Gordon and Arlene (Archer) Alley.
He lived a very interesting and fulfilling life. His early education was in the local schools of Wenham, Mass., and he graduated first in his class from Tabor Academy, Marion, Mass. Steve served eight years in the U.S. Air Force. He was licensed with the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ in 1969 and worked as a sales representative at WE Hutton, Boston. He was also a registered Realtor in Salem, Mass., and Beverly, Mass., from 1971 to 1986. He opened and operated North Shore Travel Service and North Shore Cruise Specialist from 1977 to 1984. He moved to Maine in 1986 where he built his home and settled in the community of Troy. He managed Miracle Ear, Bangor, from 1992 to 1999. He was an Aflac agent and a Medicare Advantage insurance agent.
He was a great believer and very active in civil defense and was the chairman of the Civil Defense Preparedness Committee of the American Legion in Maine. He traveled to many states with the mobile steel shelter display. Steve was an elder in the Melchizedek Priesthood in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Newport. With his abundance of knowledge and unique personality, he touched the hearts and lives of many, many people. One of Steve’s dear and close friends always referred to him as “The Oracle.” Steve loved people and a good debate, no matter the topic. He got great pleasure out of sharing and helping others in any way he could, whether they were friends or strangers, in his eyes, they were his fellow man. Steve enjoyed being outdoors, bow hunting, fishing, raising his geese, gardening, traveling, walking and sitting on the deck with his wife and friends. He also got great pleasure out of following the financial markets.
He was predeceased by his parents; his late wife, Ruth; and his precious, furry buddy, Brown Brown. He leaves his loving and devoted wife, Linda Hebb Alley of Troy; his stepson, John Cann and his companion, Jill, of Halifax, Nova Scotia; his stepdaughter, Lynne Cann of Kentville, Nova Scotia; his stepson, Doug Sanville and his wife, Debra, of Salem, Mass.; his daughter, Cindy Copp and her husband, Thom, of Grand Junction, Colo.; his son, Michael Alley of Danvers, Mass.; and his brother, Mark of Manchester. He will also be missed by his very dear and close friends in the U.S. and Canada; and by his new addition, Prancer, whom he adopted while in California.
A celebration of Steve’s life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 59 Libby Hill Road, Newport. A reception will be immediately after at Benjamin Berry American Legion Post 50, Unity. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Benjamin Berry American Legion Post 50, P.O.
