BANGOR, AUGUSTA and ORLANDO, Fla. – George E. Kirk, 87, passed away Feb. 23, 2011, at his home in Orlando, Fla. He was born Sept. 15, 1923, in Bar Harbor, to Ebba and Joseph L. Kirk.

George was a member of the U.S. Army, 70th Infantry Division during World War II, serving in Germany and retiring as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1952 with a degree in civil engineering. He retired in 1977 from the Department of Transportation, Augusta, as head of the Right-of-Way Division. He was also civil engineer for the city of Orlando, Fla., retiring in 1989.

Surviving are his loving wife of 62 years, Bertha “Betty” Kirk; his beloved son, Cmdr. George Edwin Kirk Jr., U.S. Navy, who is serving in Afghanistan; one brother, Joseph N. Kirk and wife, Nada, of Port Clyde; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial graveside services will be held at a later date in Bar Harbor. In lieu of flowers, it was George’s request that donations be made to Hospice of the Comforter, 480 West Central Parkway, Altamonte Springs, FL 32714.
