BANGOR — A local man accused of robbing a downtown bank Jan. 18 was indicted Wednesday by the Penobscot County grand jury for robbery, theft by unauthorized taking and violation of conditions of release.

In addition, Donovan W. Steen Jr., 20, of Bangor was indicted for theft by unauthorized taking in an unrelated case. He allegedly stole more than $4,000 worth of jewelry and other goods from his mother and sold them at local pawnshops.

Steen was on bail after being charged with the theft from his mother when he was arrested for the bank robbery, which led to the violation of conditions of release charge, according to Michael Roberts, deputy district attorney for Penobscot County.

The Bangor branch of the Penobscot County Federal Credit Union, 1 Merchants Plaza, next to Pickering Square, was robbed about 4:30 p.m. Jan. 18, according to Bangor police. The robber, dressed in a white long-sleeve sweatshirt with “Billabong” written on it, black sunglasses, black gloves and a black hat, handed a teller a note demanding $1,000 in cash and told her “not to call anyone, as he had a gun,” police have said.

Detectives reportedly received several calls from people who identified Steen as the person in the surveillance video released by police. He was arrested the next day after being interviewed by investigators.

Steen is scheduled to be arraigned on March 10 at the Penobscot Judicial Center. He is being held without bail at the Penobscot County Jail.

If convicted on the robbery charge, he faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000. He faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000 if convicted for stealing from his mother.
