BREWER – Harold Byron Jones Jr., 81, of 14 Upland Road, passed away Friday, March 4, 2011. A native of Millinocket, Dr. Jones was son of the late Harold B. Jones Sr. and Alice A. McPheters, both of Millinocket.
Dr. Jones served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1953 as a private, entering Aug. 2, 1951, at Fort Preble and discharged July 21, 1953 from Camp Kilmer, New Jersey. He was a marketing analyst with International Silver Co. and agricultural economist at the University of New Hampshire until he joined the University of Georgia as an agricultural economist and researcher in 1959, where he retired in 1986. Dr. Jones graduated from the University of Maine in 1951, with a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural economics with a minor in marketing; the University of Connecticut in 1956, with a Master of Science degree in agricultural economics, minor in statistics; and a doctorate in economics in 1971 from the University of Georgia. He was elected a member of Alpha Zeta, Phi Kappa Phi, Omicron Delta Epsilon and Gamma Sigma Delta, and a member of American Agricultural Economics Association. He received the USDA Superior Performance Award and Meritorious Service Award from Agricultural Marketing Service. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren, spending time at his camp, and doing stock market research.
Survivors include his sister, Jacqueline Jones of Brewer; wife, Anne; son, David A. Jones of Bogart, Ga.; stepsons, Ron, Rick and Randy Canarr; stepdaughter, Ragan Reardon; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was predeceased by Edith H. Jones; and a brother, Robert “Bobby” Jones.
Family and friends may visit 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor, where a service in honor and celebration of his life with military honors will be held 7 p.m. as the visitation concludes.
