HERMON – Eugene Arthur Glew, 69, died March 8, 2011, after a short illness. Born Sept. 4, 1941, in Bangor, to Raye Albert Glew and Olive Perkins Glew of Castine.

He graduated from Vanceboro High School in 1959. Upon graduation Gene served in the Navy until he was honorably discharged in 1965. In 1965 he married Irma Varga of Storrs, Conn. After moving back to Maine Gene made Hermon his home and began working in the glass replacement business, for Soule Glass and Portland Glass companies. In 1981 he started Gene’s Glass, Route 2, Hermon, and worked and managed the business until retiring in 2001. Gene was an avid, lifelong bowler and for many years pitched in the local men’s softball league.

Gene is survived by his wife, Irma; daughters, Karen Glew and her husband, Bill O’Connell, of Benton and Amanda Hersey and her husband, Michael, of Waterville; granddaughter, Paulina Hersey; grandsons, Dylan Hersey and Adrian O’Connell; his sister, Rosalie and her husband, Jimmy Chiarell, of Carmel; numerous nieces and nephews. Gene was predeceased by his parents. Thanks to staff at Brewer Rehabilitation and Living Center for their great care during Gene’s final weeks.

Per Gene’s wish, no services will be held. Memorial contributions are welcome to Gene’s favorite charity, Bangor Humane Society, 693B Mount Hope Ave., Bangor, ME 04401-5606.
