BANGOR – Genevieve E. Gardiner, 93, passed away March 9, 2011, at an Orono health care center. She was born March 30, 1917, in Hampden, daughter of Eugene and Lena (Remick) Smith.

She attended Hampden and Bangor schools, graduating from Bangor High School in 1934. Gen graduated from Maine School of Commerce in 1937, where she met her future husband, Byron “Buzz” Gardiner. They were married Nov. 23, 1941, and enjoyed 50 wonderful years together until his death in January 1992. Gen was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Bangor, where she served in many capacities. She was also a member of Athene Club, Bangor, Sunshine Club for Children and Hampden Historical Society.

Surviving are two children,

Mark K. Gardiner of Glenburn and Brenda L. Dorion of Winslow; two grandchildren, Jonathan Gardiner of Glenburn and Kristen Dorion of Winslow; one great-grandson, Colby; a sister-in-law, Joan Gardiner of Bangor; several nieces and nephews. She will be remembered for her warm smile and gentle ways, her love for her family and kindness to all. In addition to her parents and husband, Gen was predeceased by two brothers, George W. Smith and B. Churchill Smith; and two sisters, Dorothy Hobden and Marguerite Palmer.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, March 14, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Susan Davenport, pastor of Grace United Methodist Church, officiating. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 1 p.m. until the time of service Monday.
