FORT FAIRFIELD – Denzil L. “Bill” Evans, 83, husband of the late Gail (Jones) Evans, passed away Friday morning, March 11, 2011, at a Caribou nursing facility, after an extended illness. He was born Aug. 12, 1927, in Smithville, W.Va., son of Romeo and Alice (Hawkins) Evans.

He attended Smithville schools and went on to serve his country as a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force as a tech sergeant, serving in the Korean War, and stationed in various locations including Loring Air Force Base, Limestone. He was married to Gail Jones and after his military retirement, continued to work at Loring Air Force Base for the U.S. Civil Service at Loring Supply and Commissary. Mr. Evans was a lifelong member of Limestone Masonic Lodge No. 214 AF & AM and Veterans of Foreign Wars Paul Lockhart Post No. 6187, Fort Fairfield.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Evans was predeceased by his wife, Gail; three brothers, William, Dallas and Wayne Evans; and one sister, Evelyn Burnes. He is survived by his daughter, Jill L. Player of Fort Fairfield; two brothers, Wesley Evans and his wife, Carol, of Williamstown, W.Va., and Paul Evans of Parkersburg, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Jacob, Abagail and Ryan Player, all of Fort Fairfield; several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his loving companion of many years, Reta Shaw of Caribou and her children, Kathy Weatherhead and her husband, Jim, of Limestone, Patricia Reid of Connecticut, Ruth Anderson of Florida, and their families.

Friends may call 12:30-2 p.m. Monday, March 14, at Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield, where a Masonic memorial service will be conducted 1:45 p.m. and a funeral service 2 p.m. with the Rev. Mark Babin officiating. Spring interment with military honors will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will be held at VFW Paul Lockhart Post No. 6187, Presque Isle Street, Fort Fairfield, immediately after the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute in memory of Mr. Evans to Limestone Masonic Lodge No. 214, care of the Lodge secretary, John Irovando, 821 Bog Road, Limestone, ME 04750. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
