FRANKLIN – Amelia Jane (Johnson) Joy, 92, died March 11, 2011, at Mountain Vista, Franklin. She was born Sept. 28, 1918, in Sullivan, the daughter of Fred B. and Eva (Merchant) Johnson.
Amelia acquired the nickname, “Mumps,” after she brought home the mumps to the other siblings. Amelia had a lot of responsibilities while growing up, as she helped take care of the younger children and she walked to school early morning to start the school’s wood stove. Later on after marriage, she raised three sons while doing different odd jobs. She was a great seamstress, knit mittens and socks, worked at a local fish factory, cleaned summer homes at Grindstone Point, but her favorite job was working at Ellsworth Woolen Mill. One of her hobbies was fixing her small house up in Gouldsboro. She hand dug her well and repaired windows, ceilings and anything else that needed fixing. Most often the materials used were second hand because money was in short supply. Times were difficult raising a family, but Amelia never complained and was always willing to help anyone in need. She was often a caregiver to others, but these past few years, Amelia developed dementia and needed caregiving herself. She spent the past seven years at Mountain Vista, Franklin.
She is survived by her sons, Jordan “Joe” Joy and his wife, Ruby, of Sullivan and Alfred Joy of Alaska; sisters, Nana Young and husband, Colby, of Corea and Ruth Mack and husband, Fred, of Philadelphia; brother, Harold Johnson and wife, Leona, of Bangor; seven grandchildren, Dwayne Joy and wife, Lisa, Corinne Lee and husband, Donny, Chris Joy and wife, Gricelda, Kim Joy, Elizabeth Joy, Nadine Bates and husband, Randy, and Sandra Sigman and husband, Jim; and 10 great-grandchildren. Amelia was predeceased by her husband, Jordan Joy Jr.; infant son, Leonard; son, Everett Joy; brothers, Leonard and Ted Johnson; sisters, Bebe Slater, Bertha Delaney, Delia Barnes and Erma Lowndes; and by special friend, Ken Clark. She will be greatly missed by Rena and all the special caregivers at Mountain Vista and Grace Home.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, March 18, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, with the Rev. David Morrison officiating. A reception will be afterward at Jordan-Fernald. Spring interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Winter Harbor. Contributions in Amelia’s memory may be made to Robert and Mary’s Place, P.O. Box 5288, Ellsworth, ME 04605.
