SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — School officials in the Maine city of South Portland say a budget for next year that doesn’t include a tax increase means 21 full-time positions would have to be eliminated.

That was one of the scenarios presented to the city Board of Education on Monday.

A second proposal would require a 2.5 percent tax increase and a third would calculate the district’s financial needs without considering how much it would increase taxes.

The City Council must vote on the school budget before it goes to residents for a citywide vote.

The Portland Press Herald says proposed cuts would include teaching jobs and support staff.
