HAMPDEN – Frances “Hancy” E. Coffin, a longtime resident of Hampden, died peacefully March 19, 2011, at a local nursing home, and was fortunate to have her two sons, daughter-in-law and three granddaughters visit her within the last days of her life. Hancy was born Aug. 28, 1924, in Brewer, the middle child of George Mooney and Mary (Cox) Mooney.

Hancy was a proud and devout Catholic, who attended St. Mary’s Parochial School and graduated from John Bapst High School in 1942. During her childhood, Hancy worked with her siblings, Margaret M. (Mooney) Yargats and James J. Mooney and their adopted sister, Mary R. (Treinor) Dwinal, at their parents’ market on the corner of Second and Cedar streets in Bangor. After spending the 1940s and early 1950s working and spending time with her girlfriends, Hancy met and married her husband, Philip M. Coffin Jr., in 1954. They soon purchased a lot on Green Lake, where they built a camp, and Hancy loved spending summer weekends there with her extended family. Hancy especially enjoyed boat rides around the lake and having her granddaughters there with her. Hancy lost her husband, Phil, unexpectedly in 1970 and never remarried. Instead, she dedicated herself to raising her two sons and began a nearly 30-year career at Northeast Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Associates, Bangor. Hancy was an avid fan of University of Maine Basketball – especially the women’s team – and until an injury in 2008, she and her son, Mark, rarely missed a home game. Hancy was a communicant at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, Hampden.

Hancy is survived by her older sister, Margaret M. (Mooney) Yargats of Sewickley, Pa.; her younger brother, James J. Mooney of Summerfield, Fla.; her son, Philip M. Coffin III and his wife, Susan E. Peck, of Carrabassett Valley; her son, Mark G. Coffin of Hampden; her three granddaughters, Rachel Peck Coffin of Portland, Julia Peck Coffin of Fort Kent and Emma Peck Coffin of Carrabassett Valley; numerous beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
