CASWELL – Rena (Bernier) Leavitt, 68, died unexpectedly March 18, 2011, at a local hospital. She was born April 23, 1942, in Caswell, the daughter of Wilfred and Doris (LaBreck) Bernier.
She attended Van Buren and Caswell schools. She married Fred Leavitt, Nov. 18, 1961. She started working at Cary Medical Center in 1985 after earning her licensed practical nursing degree, her registered nursing degree in 1990, then continued until she retired in 2001. She was known as a compassionate and caring nurse having impacted many lives there. Rena was a self-made woman with many talents. She was a self-taught seamstress, quilt maker and dedicated farm wife. Affectionately known as Mimi, she doted on her granddaughters with love and attention. Her handmade little girl dresses were always complete with a matching doll dress or purse.
She is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 50 years, Fred; two sons, Steven and his wife, Dianne, of Limestone and Glen of Acton, Mass.; granddaughters, Kate, Faith and Grace; brothers, Roderick and his wife, Nancy, Gerald and Richard; in-laws, Lloyd and Judy, Greg and Raymonde, Wayne and Jeanelle; many well loved nieces and nephews. She will also be sadly missed by many dear friends who were like family to her, notably Peter and Jeri Beaulieu and their daughters, Teri and Shelly. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Jean, in 2010; brothers, Vern, Mitchell and Ronald; and her in-laws, Sam and Melvina Leavitt.
A funeral service will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, at Lancaster Morgan Funeral Home, 11 Clover St., Caribou, with the Rev. Aaron Damboise officiating.
