KOSSUTH – George H. Bunker Jr., 54, passed away peacefully March 21, 2011, surrounded by his family at a Bangor hospital. George was born March 30, 1956, in Northampton, Mass., the fifth of six children.
He spent his childhood in Massachusetts and moved to Topsfield when he was 17. He graduated from Lee Academy in 1974 and always had a good laugh about being known for sleeping through the most classes. He met his high school sweetheart in the blueberry fields and married his beautiful bride Sept. 7, 1974. George dedicated his life to public service and advocating for people in need. He spent nine years in the U.S. Navy as a submariner missile fire control technician. He worked for Washington County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy for eight years, including time as a D.A.R.E. officer. He was a State Representative for 10 years where he dedicated his time for the families of Maine. He took over the family restaurant, The Log Cabin Restaurant, which became a local gathering place for friends and family. George cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren and always looked forward to their visits. George was always willing to open his heart and home to anyone in need. George filled his family and friends’ lives with many great memories and his laugh would fill a room.
George is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Christine Bunker; his children, Candace and Deke Rhinehart, George and Kristen Bunker, and Issac Bunker; grandchildren, Brittany and Zachary Ogden; a loving and supportive extended family, and many longtime close friends. George was predeceased by his parents, George H. Bunker Sr. and Irene Bunker; and sister, Janice.
A service to celebrate George’s life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 26, at Springfield Congregational Church, Springfield. A reception will be after the service. A private burial for family and friends will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George’s name to Springfield Congregational Church.
